Creating and Uploading your Video
NOTE: The videos are due by noon on Sunday before the class in which the readings are assigned. Week 2/3 readings are due by noon on Sunday 25th September.

Step A: Record Your Video
- Record your video using the guidelines provided in class and on the class website, and below:
- The video should be between 3-4 minutes long (i.e. do not exceed 4 minutes)
- The suggested approach is to record yourself (i.e. headshot) delivering your summary of the article, but you can use visual aids (but you must be the only person speaking in the video).
- The suggested format is to spend 2-3 minutes to summarize the article, and 1-2 minutes on your own interpretation/thoughts on the article (e.g. how it relates to the broader theme for that week, how it relates to the other readings, what is missing from the article, an example or application of the concepts described in the article, etc)
- Once you record the video, you should use video editing software as required to shorten/edit your video: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_editing_software
- If your video is over 100 Megabytes, you need to compress your video. You should be able to do this using the software you recorded your video with, or use Windows Movie Maker or comparable software: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-compress-video-for-web-with-movie-maker/
Step B: Upload Your Video
- Go to http://vimeo.com/socent
- Sign up with the username and password provided in class (confidential)
- Click on UPLOAD on the main navigation menu
- Click on “Choose a file to upload”
- Select your file on your computer and begin the upload process
- While the video is uploading, fill in the descriptions as follows:
- Use the format for the title as ”(READING TITLE)”
- Use the following format for the description: “This video is a summary of the (insert full reading title) by (insert author name). This video was created by (insert your name) as part of the ENTR4800: Social Entrepreneurship class at the Schulich School of Business at York University in Fall 2011.”
- Use the following tags in your description: social entrepreneurship, social enterprise, ENTR4800
- Click on “Save All Changes” once you have completed all the fields above (even if the video is still uploading)
NOTE: if you have difficulties uploading, watch this tutorial: http://vimeo.com/339189
Step C: Verify Your Upload
- Go to http://vimeo.com/socent
- Play your video in its entirety to ensure that the video and audio are clear
- Draft a summary of the text using the following guidelines:
- Maximum of 3-4 paragraphs
- In your own words, summarize the key themes of the article. You may use occasional direct quotes, but the description must largely be your own interpretation rather than the executive summary or abstract taken direct from the article.
- Email entr4800@socialentrepreneurship.ca before the start of the class with a direct link your video and the text summary from the steps above.
NOTE: Please ensure that you email us with your video and summary from Step C, as this is a confirmation that we have “received” your video assignment by the due date (before the start of the class it is due in).
Grading scheme
- Aim for between 3-4 minutes (3 minimum. 4 maximum)
Summary of reading content and key takeaways – 45%
- The key to the summary is quality. Did you understand the main takeaways? Were you able to succinctly summarize them in enough detail and clarity for your classmates to understand?
Discussion of your point of view on the topic – 45%
- Again, focus on quality. It is not sufficient to simply agree or disagree with the author. Focus on adding new thinking to the topic at hand (e.g. is there a perspective that the author isn’t considering? What are the ramifications of the author is writing – to entrepreneurs, to the broader community, etc?)
Creativity in delivery – 10%
- You are required to be in the video (i.e. film yourself). Beyond this, you can deliver the info in any way you feel useful and appropriate. Note that the videos will be posted online, and select videos will be shown in class.
